Science week – bubble investigations

We tried to blow large bubbles and also investigated what would happen to the shape of the bubble when the bubble blowers were different shapes.

Our First School trip

In April we had a great day on our first school trip. We visited Shrewsbury Museum in the morning, after lunch we walked around Shrewsbury. By the end of the day we were experts at spotting Tudor buildings!

Summer ready!

A reminder that children need sun hats and water bottles in school daily. Sun cream should be applied before coming to school. School staff are not able to apply sun cream. Thank you for your cooperation with this. Lets hope we have some much needed sunshine soon!

Uniform reminder – please ensure children are coming to school in correct uniform. Shoes need to be worn, not trainers or boots. Leggings and cycling shorts are not school uniform. Some children choose to wear cycling shorts under their summer dresses, that is fine. Please refer to the uniform policy if you are unsure.

Vision Statement

This term we have been reviewing our school vision statement:

Enabling our children to learn and succeed in a nurturing environment.

In assemblies we have been thinking about our school, what Hodnet means to us and collecting words to showcase that. The children generated some excellent ideas, some examples of their words are:

Welcoming, respectful, thoughtful, kind, happy, safe, successful, democratic, determined, equal, fair, accepting, fun, amazing, fantastic, excellent.

In Staff meetings we have also discussed this statement and ways to update it, one simple update suggestion is:

“Enabling all children to flourish in a safe, nurturing and welcoming learning environment”

Our governors will also be looking at this over the summer term. We would like to open this up to all stakeholders, asking parents who have any suggestions of either words or phrases which they would like to add to this review process, to please email ideas/suggestions to penny.lyall@hod.318education.co.uk.

Thank you.

Father’s Day event

Proud of class 6

Class 6 children completed their SAT’s testing this week. They all worked incredibly hard, showing determination and perseverance to complete the challenging tasks expected of them. We are incredibly proud of them and they should all feel proud of themselves, they gave it everything they could and that’s all that matters.

The care, support and generosity shown this week by the staff, both past and present, was very humbling to see. At Hodnet, we pride ourselves on supporting all our children and adapting our environments to ensure we give everyone the very best chance of success – this week was no exception. A huge thanks goes to the volunteers and staff who made this possible and to the rest of school for their patience and understanding. Thank you – we did it and we’re all relieved that its Friday!

Whilst the tests are important to showcase academic achievement, they are only a small fraction of education. Our pupils are kind, resourceful, resilient, courageous and successful in so many other ways. They are life long learners and will all eventually leave us with their heads held high. For that we are immensely proud.

Relationships and Sex Education

You may be aware that the government is currently consulting on the SRE curriculum. There are a number of changes being proposed and final information will be provided after the consultation. One thing publicised in the national news this week was a potential change in the age at which children are taught about conception, suggesting that children will not taught about this until they are over the age of 9. At Hodnet, we do not teach this until Y5&Y6 currently anyway. Prior to this the children are taught about puberty, changes and relationships. Some of the content is also within the national curriculum for Science. The 318 Education Trust have recently reviewed and consulted on the Trust wide policy for SRE and PSHE, copies of the policies, procedures and the current curriculum content can be found on our website.
