They pass this way only once, so we should aim to litter their pathways with quality experiences…
School Council
School Council
At Hodnet school we follow the principles of democracy to appoint School Council members from each class to form a committee who meet at least termly to ensure the voice of the children are recognised and acted upon. The children meet with staff members including our senior leaders and share their opinions and make decisions about key items within school. Mrs Lyall and Miss Darmanin lead the School Council.
This year the school council will be working on:
• Improving the school libraries and helping with the re-organisation of KS2 class libraries and the main KS2 Library.
• Helping to organise and lead new playground activities and games using the playtime equipment.
• Organising the playtime ‘buddy’ system.
Projects
Our school council have been working hard to improve our playground. They have conducted research and completed surveys for each class based on children’s choices for playground equipment. Democratic decisions were made when making final purchases. In the school holidays, our new playground markings were installed and our new gym equipment based on the children’s choices. They have been very popular, and we are proud of our decisions. We now have an 8 piece adventure trail, a large target game, a number footprints race, hopscotch, a road track, a map of the UK, a compass, snakes and ladders game, alphabet footsteps, croc jump and a new netball court.
Eco-Warriors
At Hodnet school we follow the principles of democracy to appoint Eco-Warrior team members from each class to form a committee who meet termly to ensure the voice of the children are heard loud and clear when it comes to climate change and supporting our environment. The children meet with staff members including our senior leaders and share their opinions and make decisions about key items within school. Mrs Huxtable leads the Eco-Warrior team.
The Eco-Warrior team have been successful in achieving their Bronze and Silver level National Eco awards.
This year the Eco-Warriors will be working on:
• Supporting COP28 and its outcomes.
• Participating in Connecting Classrooms led by the British Council*
• Keeping up the good work to rejuvenate our outdoor space and make sure it is well used.
• Planting trees as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations
• Connecting classrooms – this is a British Council led initiative which we are proud to be a part of, we are linked to a school in Palestine and we communicate with them half termly. We discuss a range of topics and interests, including how climate change is affecting them and how this compares to us.
Safety Crew
At Hodnet Primary School, we elect a team of children representatives to be on our Safety Crew Team. The Safety Crew wear star badges and have their photographs up in the school hall so that they can be identified by other children. The main purpose of the team is to work with staff and governors as the pupil voice within health, safety and safeguarding. They promote safe choices within school and help to ensure that our site is safe and welcoming.
The Safety Crew meet with Ian Barlett leader of the Safer Schools team at our annual Safer Schools meeting. As part of the annual meeting this year they received the certificate to certify that we are a safer schools accredited site and they enjoyed asking questions and talking about ways to keep everyone safe, happy and healthy.
House Teams
At Hodnet we have a school House system. All children are placed into one of our four house teams. Each House has a House Captain and a Vice Captain who are elected during the Autumn term following a democratic process. The whole school involved in the election process and all class 6 have the option to vote. The captains work closely with our Sports Captains to encourage our school community to work together as a team. Each week we have a winning house team as the children earn house points though their behaviour, attitude and learning. We celebrate this success in our weekly achievement assembly.
Every year the children play to earn points in our Sports Day, these points are collected together and the annual sports winner is announced. The trophy is then decorated in the appropriate House colours for the following academic year.
Our Houses:
• The Owls
• The Badgers
• The Foxes
• The Squirrels
