Exploring Lunar New Year

Last week we explored some of the traditions of Lunar New year in some cultures. We made red paper lanterns and tried to decorate them, we decorated our home corner and cleaned it read for the New Year. We also made red envelopes with golden coins in and counted the golden coins carefully. We also read several stories with Lunar New Year as a key thread. Some of us made dragon puppets. We also played memory card games to help us remember some of the elements of Lunar New Year, we also wrote wishes for our wish tree and enjoyed scarf dancing.

Woodland Wednesday Lunar New Year Exploration

Last week as part of our woodland Wednesday session we learnt about two key elements of Lunar New Year traditions: the story of the animals of the Chinese zodiac and the story of Nain. We learnt that this year is the year of the horse and so we made hobby horses from old socks stuffed with leaves and tied onto a stick. We also made scary faces and noises to scare off Nain!

Making shapes in gymnastics

We focused on making shapes with our bodies in our gymnastics session.

Story telling week

We really enjoyed story telling with Sally Tonge, she told us stories in imaginative ways and helped us to understand how we could be great story tellers! We especially enjoyed the story of how the snowdrops gave the snow it’s colour.

Music composition

This week in our music session we warmed up and explored the pulse of music similarly to our last session. We listened to the piece of music: The eye of the Tiger and discussed how this made us feel, what we noticed about the music and how it compared to the piece we listened to last week. We composed our own short music patterns on the glockenspiels using three notes.

Noun phrases

This week we have been reading a text about “The Draognfish Flying machine”. During Friday’s English lesson we wrote a descriptive paragraph which included expanded adjective phrases in order to describe the vehicle. Here are some examples:

What do nursery rhymes tell us about the past?

We focused on two different nursery rhymes: Wee Willy Winky and Polly Put the Kettle on. Some of us dressed up as the characters from the nursery rhymes and compared them to the present. We talked about the differences and the similarities.

Nursery rhyme catastrophe!

We received a parcel from the King of Nursery Rhyme land, a letter telling us that the Great Nursery Rhyme book had been muddled up and some of the nursery rhymes had been muddled up like: Humpty Dumpty sat on a cow! The only nursery rhyme that was correct was the Wheels on the bus, we read the nursery rhyme and made a text map of it. We talked about our favourite nursery rhymes.

Catching a star in Forest Schools

We have been reading a book called “How to catch a star” by Oliver Jeffers in reading skills sessions. On Wednesday we tried to catch our own stars and also read a story called : “My Pet star” we then personalised our own stars and took them on an adventure in the woodlands, told them stories and sang them nursery rhymes. Lots of us let our stars help them build the den we have been working on.

Micro habitats

During our Forest Schools session we looked at micro habitats. We went on a hunt to look for micro habitats and made a tally chart of the living things we found in these micro habitats.
