Making boats in Forest Schools

The fairies wrote to us and asked if we might be able to design them some boats to use as it has rained so much! We tied together sticks and tested them to see if they floated. Some of us assed leaf sails, there was lots of testing and modifying going on!

Germs are not for sharing

Last week Ziggy asked us why it was important to wash our hands carefully, we read a story about washing hands, listened to a song written by the NHS and then practised washing our hands.

Humpy Dumpty Science investigation

Last week Ziggy set us an “I wonder….” asking if we could investigate a way to keep “Humpty Dumpty” safe and protect him from cracking. We made predictions about which materials would prevent him from cracking and then all worked together as recorders to record if the egg did or didn’t crack. Some children took on roles in the investigation such as: health and safety officer, fair test checker, observer and measurer.

Music Time

We had a great music lesson on Wednesday last week, we listened to music and identifying the pulse, either by clapping or tapping. After this warm up and sang Old MacDonald, some of us used claves to play along and identify the tempo of the “Old MacDonald” part and then some us used shakers to play along to the part of the “ee-i-ee-i-o” part.

Poetry writing

We have written funny poems about different animals, asking questions and using a repeating pattern to add rhythm. At the end of the week we used the laptops to copy up our poems so that we could make a class poetry book.

Hockey skills

This week we had our first hockey skills lesson in PE with Mr Ward, unfortunately

is was raining so we had to practise the skills we had learnt about how to hold a hockey stick in doors.

Making habitats

We have been learning about different habitats in science and spent Friday afternoon making different habitats in boxes, we researched the habitats that we wished to create and then used the craft items in class to construct them in a box.

Performing composed pieces

The children enjoyed kicking off the music session last week with some scarf dancing joining in with some Lunar New year inspired music. We built upon what we had learnt in our previous music lesson and composed more short pieces of music using the notes CDE. After a little practise we performed these pieces of music to the rest of the class.

Comparing the UK to Australia

Last week in geography class 2 learnt about the continent of Australia and compared it to the UK. To finish the week off some of us made boomerangs using Aboriginal symbols to decorate them.

Designing and making vehicles

This half term class 2 have been investigating, designing and making their own vehicles. Children looked at and sorted toy vehicles, they then learnt about the different parts of the vehicles and what all the vehicles have in common. The focus of the unit of study was looking at the wheels, axel and chassis of the vehicle. Children designed their own vehicles varying from ice cream vans, pizza delivery bikes, duck vehicles and lorries. They used cardboard boxes to create the vehicle bodies and then cut dowel, used straws and milk bottle tops, cotton reels etc as wheels.
