Rocks and Fossils with Dr Rogers 27th November 2024

Today we had a fabulous visit from geologist Dr Steven Rogers. He brought in lots of different rock samples for us to look closely at and some amazing fossils to hold and study. We learnt a lot about igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks as well as fossils such as trilobites and ammonites.

Online Safety

This week Miss Darmanin led our half termly safety assembly with a focus on Online Safety. Children were reminded of the SMART safety rules and they discussed each element. A huge well done to everyone, Miss Darmanin was very impressed with how knowledgeable the children are. They were all reminded to share the SMART safety rules at home and to always make sure grown ups are aware of their online activity.

Flint Knapping with Mrs Watts 20th November 2024

On 20th November 2024 we were lucky enough to welcome Mrs Suzy Watts into Class 3 to show and tell us all about flint knapping, a stone age skill. Flint knapping is the skill of making stone tools by hitting a stone core with a hammer to create flakes. The flakes are then shaped into tools like arrowheads, knives, and spearpoints.

Prehistoric Art October 2024

This term we have been learning about prehistoric cave paintings and trying some ourselves using pastel and charcoal. We have been drawing animals on paper and sandpaper we they could experience what it may have been like to paint or draw on cave walls. You can also see us working on coil clay pots and some of the ones we have made.

Beeston Castle Trip

On 22nd October 2024, Classes 3 and 4 visited Beeston Castle in Cheshire. We walked up the very steep hill to the top where we saw the ruins of the medieval castle. We could see for miles and miles! We also visited a replica Bronze Age roundhouse.

What Do Plants Need?

We looked at what a plant needs to survive. We divided into groups and each group looked at a different element such a light, water, soil, air and the correct temperature. We observed our young broad bean plants over a week and then looked at the results.

Uniform

A reminder that full uniform is expected at all times. Even though we are approaching the end of term, that shouldn’t mean that we let pride in our uniform standards slip.  We wear our Hodnet blue, to show that we are part of our school team, we are smart, proud and ready to learn. We are also adhering to our school rules and values by wearing the correct uniform, as it is a school policy to wear it.

Uniform is a fundamental part of most schools and other organisations procedures, ensuring communities are unified. Our children will find high expectations of uniform standards right through their educational career, so we aim high from the beginning.

We also recognise that our children require parental support to ensure they are adhering to our uniform policy. Thank you to parents and families for your cooperation with this.

Uniform Policy 2024 26

We have lots of uniform free to families due to the high number of good quality donations that we receive. Please pop into the lobby to take a look of you would like some.

Enchanted Apples and Magic Stories

This week, Class 3 started a new English unit on portal stories. Our hook lesson involved imaging that the basket of apples Mrs Williams brought in contained one enchanted apple. In the story-telling area, we each ate an apple and imagined what magic power it might have. Some of us thought the magic apple might make us a champion footballer or give us a secret voice, only audible to animals. We had great ideas.

We also thought of some lovely adjectives to describe our apples as we ate them such as; crunch, juicy, delicious, tasty to name but a few. Mrs Williams then read us our model text; a story about a little girl Poppy who finds an ancient, wooden door which takes her to a world of fantastic feasts and tiny people. Our work in the coming weeks will be inspired by this story when we will write our own portal tales.
