Grouping and writing the expressions

We have been working on grouping again this week in maths sessions, writing the multiplication expressions for this.

Photography

Today we kicked off our photography unit in computing in forest schools. We worked in pairs to take six photos: an insect, a tree, a close up, an action shot, a photo of the distance and a group selfie. We talked about how to make this photographs successful, children took photos on the i pads, looked through what we had taken and then took more if we were not happy with the quality of the photos we had taken.

Planning a warning story

This week we have deepened our understanding of the warning story we are focusing on this term about two polar bear cubs. At the end of the week we have planned our own version of a warning tale, we have changed the animal and thus several other aspects of the story.

Reading skills – The Way Home for Wolf

Over the last two weeks we have been reading the Rachel Bright book called: The way home for Wolf. We have identified valuable vocabulary in the story, read an extract and then the whole story. We answered retrieval questions about the text. We also compared it using venn diagrams to other Rachel Bright story books. At the end of the day we listened to the audio book version of the story.

Robot algorithms

Last term we learnt about algorithm’s and programming simple robots. The children learnt to write their own algorithm for a bee bot and then programme the bee bot with that algorithm. If the bee bot did not follow the pathway we expected we learnt how to debug the algorithms we had set. Children worked together in pairs to design their own mat and pathway for the bee bot to follow from the beginning to the end of the route.

Gymnastics

This week in our gymnastics lesson with Miss Manton we developed our gymnastics skills, we worked on making shapes with our bodies. Children learnt that in order for balances to be successful in gymnastics they needed to develop good body tension, this will help them to have stable and still balance shapes.

Road safety

Ziggy asked us how we could keep safe near the road, we watched a video and then went outside and practised and some of us used small world items to help us practise crossing the road safely.

Forest Schools map work

Today, we received a letter from the Forest Fairies asking for help. Some of the characters from our phonics stories were playing hide and seek with the Forest Fairies in the woodland but they wouldn’t come out from their hiding places. The only way that they would come out is if the fairies were able to read what each of them had received for Christmas. Unfortunately, the fairies are not as good at reading as us so we had to help them. Using a map with coloured dots to show us where the characters were hiding, we had to be detectives and follow the map to find each of them. We worked with our partners to use our phonic knowledge to read each of the words containing the oa digraph or igh trigraph. Finally, we linked each character to their present on our activity clipboard so that we could tell the fairies the answers they needed.

Great team work and some excellent discussions about how we needed to orientate our maps.

Ordering quantities and matching numerals

This week in our maths sessions we have been focusing on counting, ordering and matching numerals. We have been ordering block towers and ensuring they are in a step pattern.

Woodland Wednesday – spotting changes

We were delighted that the weather was a little milder for our Woodland Wednesday session this week and we headed outside. Children spotted new plants growing and we took photos of them to look at in class. We were worried that some of our friends throughout the school might stamp, stomp or step on the new plants so we got busy making signs to warn them about the new plants. We talked about what colours would be good for the signs and the images we could draw on the signs to help people understand.
