Goodbye Mrs Akers!

Today we said goodbye to Mrs Akers as she leaves us for pastures new. In celebration assembly we presented her with plants, flowers, gifts and cards to express our gratitude for the joy that she has brought to our school throughout her time here. A truly special person, we shall all miss you greatly.

Mrs Akers alongside Mrs Noden has provided children in our reception classes with the very best start to their learning journey. They open children’s minds to endless possibilities, create a love of learning and begin to establish and foster early relationships. Getting learning right in the early years plays a crucial role to establishing future success; creating the essential foundations for further opportunities. We have been so lucky to have such a strong team at Hodnet over the years.

Mrs Akers we thank you for all that you have done over the years and we wish you continued happiness and future success. We look forward to hopefully seeing you in school with trainee’s as you guide them on their path to being excellent early years educators.

Visiting St Luke’s Church

As part of our learning about special buildings we visited St Lukes Church, Hodnet. We walked down “Magnolia walk” in Hodnet Hall gardens and saw lots of signs of spring. When we were in the church we searched for elements of the building that show that it is a special building.

Shropshire Falconry visit

What a great experience we had on Tuesday afternoon meeting some birds, some of use held some an owl. We all watched the owls fly around our school hall and we learnt lots about how birds are different to other animals.

Healthy Teeth

We had a visit from the school nurse who bought a friend with her called Dennis the Dragon, we all practised brushing Dennis’s teeth and played a game sorting the things that would make happy teeth and things that would make teeth sad because

they had too much sugar.

The Hungry Beak Cafe

The fairies had written us another letter, this time thanking us for all the bird feeders we had made. They told us that they were setting up a “Hungry Beak” café and they needed some new recipes. We innovated our own bird pizzas and took photos of all the stages so that we can write our own instructions for making a bird pizza. We talked about the imperative verbs that we would use in an instruction text like this.

Making birds nests

We have learnt about different birds making birds nests, we watched videos of blue tits making nests and robins. We read a book about different kinds of birds nests, called Best Nest and a story called “The Prefect Nest”. We also watched a video about puffins nests. The children then used the “scrap modelling” materials to create their own Perfect nest for a bird and talked about the materials they chose based on their qualities.

Bonkers about birds

We have followed the children’s interests and we are embarking on a project about birds. The fairies left us a bag of bird seed and items to help us make bird feeders along with a letter asking us to help their friends the birds and lots of bird feeder making instructions. We tried out lots of the instructions and made lots of different bird feeders.

Shrove Tuesday fun

We marked Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes and topping them with traditional syrup, honey or lemon and sugar toppings. We also explored the composition of 7 with healthy fruit toppings on pancakes, exploring the different ways that we could put 7 pieces of fruit on the top of the pancakes.

Class R meet the new school pets…

Today Class R met the new school pets. They were very calm and gentle with our new Guinea pigs and enjoyed learning how to care for them.

Polly Put the Kettle on

As part of our nursery rhymes project we looked at the nursery rhyme: Polly put the kettle on. We looked at pictures depicting this and talked about “putting the kettle on” meant putting it on the cooker. Some children from the class acted out putting on the kettled now and putting on the kettle in the past. We talked about the differences: clothes, electrical appliances etc. We also looked at how they would have made tea using loose tea leaves, we had great fun trying this with cold water and using the tea strainers.
