Oakerwood Experience

The Oakerwood Experience

On Monday 23rd March, Year Six set off for our residential to Oakerwood. We were very excited about the week and although staying away from home for such a long time was something new, we were all looking forward to the adventure.

The week was very busy as we participated in many activities, including low ropes, pizza making, crate stacking, shelter building, high ropes, paint making and nature trails. All of the instructors were incredibly supportive, fun and kind – encouraging us whilst also keeping us entertained. They instructed us clearly, explaining the safest way to do each activity.

It was a fabulous week which we will always remember.

High Ropes

We did a fantastic activity call High Ropes. This included the Zipwire, Monkey Climb and Leap of faith which were all simply exhilarating. The zipwire stretched across a huge field and was my personal favourite. The monkey climb involved towering trees which we climbed and the Leap of faith was another fantastic challenge. It was an amazing day and a great start to the week.

Leap Of Faith

The team did the Leap of Faith on Monday afternoon. The aim was to climb up the very tall post and then to pull yourself up onto the top which was very narrow. Although we had a harness on there was nothing on the platform to hold on to. It was quite scary!

We then had to go to the edge and jump off whilst also trying to grab onto the bar which hung above you. If you could do this you then had to try to do a pull up! Everyone cheered each other as we tried to grab the bar – many of us actually managed to do it!  It was an activity which we all enjoyed.

Paintball

Paintball was a fantastic fun-filled challenge which we all enjoyed. Before we began, the instructors took time to go through the safety checks and explain the rules in a clear way. Then we suited up and got ready to play! Our first activity was called Capture the Bomb. We were in two teams and played against each other – coming up with strategies and a plan to outwit each other.  We played this twice and then we prepared for the final round. It was quite difficult because in this round, no one was out so it was a constant battle to try to win! It was great fun, working together as well as charging around with the paintballs!

Crate Stacking

At Oakerwood, one of the activity’s was crate stacking. It was very enjoyable It is where two people are clipped together and have to climb onto crates whilst others stack the crates higher and higher. Some of the team also use the ropes to keep the climbers safe. It was a lot of fun and filled with laughter.

It was a fantastic week and the Year 6 team really worked well together, supporting  and encouraging each other. It was a wonderful week during which the children showed resilience, courage, kindness and determination. We all had a lot of fun! I am certain that many core memories were made! The staff thoroughly enjoyed the week and couldn’t be more proud of our Hodnet Year 6 Team.

Miss Darmanin

Oakerwood update

Miss Darmanin and I have had daily correspondence about the events at Oakerwood, ensuring safety and wellbeing of all. So far they are having a brilliant time.

The weather has been mixed, with some beautiful sun, bit of rain, hail and even some snow! They have been cold, but thoroughly enjoying themselves. Miss Darmanin has commented on their super behaviour and how proud she is of their efforts to attempt everything and push themselves. Their teamwork skills have also been amazing. So far this week the children have completed crate stacking, capture the flag, paintballing, pizza making, den building, zip wire, tall tree climbing and high ropes activities. They have also shared the camp life experiences, supporting each other, story telling, warming up with hot chocolates and loving their glamping pods!

I will update with photos when they have the opportunity to send some through!

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Lyall

Oakerwood day 1

Y6 set off on their residential adventure on Monday! What fun they’ve already had! We are incredibly proud of them, everyone has given something a go, including the zip wire, leap of faith and monkey tree climbing.

They finished the day off with a bit of maths before settling down for the night in their pods. A great first night.

Well done class 6!

The people who had been chosen were Theo, Archie, Charlie, Eva, Libbie, Lily, Milly, Harriet and Finn. They did exceptionally well and came third overall. This is a really good achievement for our year 6s and we are beyond proud of them. They also beat the winners, which was Ellesmere (1-0). Everyone really enjoyed playing the tournament!

T1 Year 6 Rugby Tournament

T1 Rugby

On the 19th of March the year six tag rugby team went to Oswestry rugby club to play tag rugby against other schools in a competition. If you came first place you would get into the next round where you would play against all the winners around Shropshire but we came second. We played five games and won three games and drew two games. The teams we played against were Longlands, Baschurch ,Whittington, Market Drayton Juniors and Myddle. Although we didn’t come first the team is still very happy because we played very well and didn’t lose a game! The school that came in first place was Baschurch with thirteen points, Hodnet in second with eleven points and Market Drayton Juniors in third with ten points.

Sporsthall Athletics Competition

Sportshall Athletics
During this year, some of the Year 6 children have been competing in a Sportshall Athletics competition.
The first round was held at Maurice Chandler and the team, made up of 6 girls and 5 boys competed in events such as relay, obstacle and hurdles. The girls came first and the boys second but collectively the Year 6 team won the competition. It was a day of great teamwork and staff were thrilled with their positive attitude.
The team automatically went through to county finals which took place on Tuesday, 10th March. Again, the team worked well supporting each other and competed with a great attitude. The results came in with the boys coming in 4th and the girls came 3rd.
The children are all very proud of their amazing achievements as are Hodnet Primary School.
Well done to everyone who took part.

Class 6 – Trip to Cosford

Trip to RAF Cosford
On a Sunny Tuesday, we went to RAF Cosford to learn about World War I and II. We got on the bus at 09:00 am and got there at 09:50.

On arrival, we waited for the other two schools who were also taking part in the Evacuee Day. Once they got there, we were taken into an auditorium where all the children sat and were told that we were now evacuees from World War II. Then, two teachers from each school were called on to the stage. The Billeting Officer walked up and down inspecting them saying which ones were scruffy or had nits and which might be selected to go to live with a host family. It was funny but also made us think how the children may have felt.

After that, we went on to the first Workshop during which we learnt about how and where the children were evacuated. Using our maths knowledge, we worked out the time that it took to get there and how far they had to travel. We then did some geography work, using large ordnance maps, and a compass to explore how far the children travelled.

Then, we explored some of the planes, we tried to find some facts about them.

After lunch, we went to the next Workshop which was a school classroom. When we got there, we were told not to open the desks but some people opened the desks and got a detention. Matias and Harrison T were identified as German spies. We learnt more about life as an evacuee, learning that some got sent abroad whilst others went to the country and never returned home! We also learnt that some of those on boats got torpedoed and many people were killed.

Before leaving, we were able to explore and try the artefacts such as gas masks and military clothing. We also looked at children’s toys and games. Eva said it was an interesting day which gave us an idea of life as a child during the war.

Hodnet Celebrates World Book Day!

Hodnet kicked off our World Book Day celebrations with a Traitors themed assembly!

We were welcomed into the Great Reading Castle of Hodnet – a place where the Faithful Readers were being thwarted by the Book Traitors. The Faithful Readers love stories, use their imagination and protect books; whereas the Book Traitors try to stop the main character, they try to stop the happy endings and they try to make stories something to dislike.

Four Readers had been chosen at the secret round table and one of those was selected to be the Book Traitor.  The Readers were set two challenges to see if the children could work out who was the Book Traitor.

The first challenge asked the Readers to identify the book using picture clues. The children tried to guess which of our Readers was the Traitor!

In the second challenge, our Readers were given a book character and had to deliver two truths and a lie about their book. The children had to see if they could spot the traitor by the way they delivered their lie.

After the two challenges, the children voted for the Reader they thought was the Book Traitor. It was in fact Miss Honey from Matilda!

After successfully finding the Traitor, the children were asked to consider the Oath of the Faithful Reader. Faithful Readers promise to give books a chance; to use their imagination; to try new books and to protect the magic of reading!

It was a great start to our World Book Day celebtrations!
