Learning about homelife in the past

This week we have been thinking about how our homes might have looked in the past and the things we would have had in them. We had a box of items from the museum and sorted them into items from the past and items from now. We talked about the differences in terms of materials, electricity etc. We also sorted our home corner and put all the items that are from now into a box and enjoyed dressing up. Children looked the items in the discovery box and tried to guess what they would have been for and at the end of the day the items were revealed. This work was linked to our story reading Peepo and we enjoyed cleaning brass with braso and examining the pictures in the story. We looked at pictures of kitchens in the past and bathrooms in the past and spoke about how they are different to our bathrooms now.

Victorian style portraits

We looked at Victorian style portraits and recreated them, we remembered that we could not smile and that people in them wanted to wear their best clothes and show how much money they had!

May Day celebrations in Forest Schools

We had a great morning celebrating May Day in Forest Schools (we learnt about some of the rituals and traditions of Beltaine celebrations). We lit a fire (we learnt that this was one of the traditions) and toasted marshmallows, we decorated a May tree and danced around it, we made a May Day feast in the mud kitchen, we made May Day music. We also looked at some willow cuttings that had rooted in water, some herb cuttings and some sweet pea seeds that had shot and rooted.

Art Club outdoor art

We looked at artwork by the artist Andy Goldsworthy and used this as inspiration to create our own outdoor artwork. Great team work, negotiation and creative skills!

Reception learn about resilience

One of our class puppets was feeling cross because he was drawing a picture and he had made a hole in it by accident. He wanted to stomp and shout but we helped him come up with ways to deal with this anger. We read a story called “A beautiful oops”, which helped us think about how mistakes can be made into wonderful things. We then made some of his torn and scrupled pieces of paper into wonderful pieces of artwork. At the end of the day Mrs MacCallum accidently drew on Mrs Greggory’s picture and the children helped Mrs Gregory think about how she could seal with this.

Our first class trip to Shrewsbury Museum

Our first class trip was brilliant! We had a great morning exploring the museum, finding out what the children in some of the portraits had been up to during the night and helping the security guard Dave. We explored the differences between items from now and items from the past and used the words fragile, worn and delicate.

In the afternoon we walked around Shrewsbury looking at the different buildings – we were really good building detectives finding out if the buildings were Tudor buildings, Victorian Buildings or modern buildings. We also went to see Charles Darwin’s statue at the library.

It was such a lovely day, lots of members of staff at the museum commented on the children’s impeccable behaviour and the ways in which they engaged in the workshop. They walked really sensibly around the town and were really observant. At the end of the day we talked about our favourite parts of the day, lots of children’s highlights were the bus journey and lunch time! As Harry commented the only thing that could have made the day better was having an ice cream from the ice cream man… I couldn’t have agreed more but I’m not sure Mr Noden would have been too please had I have purchased 21 ice creams on our joint account card!

Classroom Easter activities

We had a wonderful week leading up to the Easter holidays, creating Easter patterns on eggs, Easter egg hunts (phonics related), creating repeating patterns and making stained glass windows inspired by those we saw in Hodnet Church the week before.

Easter party fun with Pre School

We had a great Easter party with Pre School on Tuesday afternoon, rescuing eggs, rolling eggs, decorating biscuit eggs and paper eggs, making rabbit ear headbands, sharing Easter books, going on an egg hunt and matching Easter eggs. We finished off the party with an Easter bunny biscuit, an Easter story and a game of Sleeping Bunnies.

Easter Forest Schools fun

We had a great morning thinking about Easter in Forest Schools, toasting hot cross buns (we talked about the cross on the top), completing an egg hunt with phonics reading clues and making traditional Easter gardens. We all put a cross in our Easter gardens as we had been learning about the Christian Easter story in RE.
