We learnt about Harvest Celebrations

We joined in with the Harvest celebrations in school and we looked at photos of Harvest displays in Christian Churches. We talked about what they all had in common.

We learnt about Diwali

We explored the story book: “The Best Diwali Ever” during our reading skills sessions and also during Forest Schools. We tasted Diwali sweets and learnt about some of the traditional Hindu Diwali celebrations. During our Forest schools session we made Diwali cards and rangoli patterns using leaves.

We learnt the phoneme b

We learnt the phoneme b and made our own bread and butter. We read the recipe together, identifying the tricky word the in the recipe. Then we measured the ingredients using cups and spoons. We mixed, kneaded and shaped our dough, it was then baked in the kitchen ovens. In the afternoon we made our own butter using a butter churn.

We learnt the phoneme h

We explored the phoneme h, creating a hat shop, reading Hairy McClairy, creating crazy hairstyles, role playing at the hair dressers (which was a real hit!) and cutting herbs. In the afternoon we learnt about our village Hodnet and explored an ariel view of the village, learning about places we would see in Hodnet and places we would not see in Hodnet.

We learnt the phoneme ck

We learnt the phoneme ck and explored different rocks. We compared rocks with our friends and sorted different rocks according to their characteristics.

We learnt the phoneme o

We learnt how to squeeze fresh orange juice and explored different orange juicers. We also explored different shades of orange paint, we made octopuses and role played at the Opticians.

We learnt the phoneme g

The day was spent exploring the phoneme g. Making homes for the Gruffalo from the blocks, listening to the Gruffalo story on the Vox Block player, making patterns in glitter, exploring different shades of green paint. During the afternoon in our “Messy Monday” session some of us gardened (planting garlic bulbs) and some of us made guacamole

for our afternoon snack.

Learning the phoneme E

We had a great morning exploring eggs as part of learning the e phoneme.  Inside the discovery box were a range of eggs which the children compared and talked about. We rescued Elsa by reading the words on the ice blocks and made our own Elmer models. The day was finished reading an Elmer story.

When I grow up….

We read a great new book written by Rob Biddulph called “When I grow up” and talked about the different things we would like to be when we grow up. All the children created pictures of themselves dressed up to “go to work” and we all wrote letters to ourselves about the things we would like to do when we are grown up. These letters are to be opened when we are 18.

We also spent the time in playing at a selection of careers: some of us designed buildings and then made models of them in the “architects office”, some of us wrote, illustrated and published our own books in the “Authors office”, some of us created fitness plans in the “Hodnet Fitness Studio”. Whilst others of us worked in the “Hodnet Design studio” designing and making costumes for a selection of dolls and finally some of us worked in the ice cream shop with money. We had a lot of fun playing “when I grow up”!

Friday afternoon finding out about careers

We had another wonderful afternoon finding out about different careers and meeting people from the world of work!

We met:

  • Police Officers – who told us about their jobs and showed us around the police car.
  • A vet nurse – who helped us to bandage some animals, and told us lots about working with animals.
  • A radiographer – we had to guess what parts of the body the x rays were of.
  • A RAF helicopter pilot – who let us try on some uniform and showed us a video of a chinook.
  • Someone who works with cakes and has connections with a Royal baker – she helped us to decorate some cakes.
  • An aeroplane pilot – who told us how wonderful her job is and showed us a view from her office window.
  • A tank engineer – who told us how he became interested in engineering.
