New procedures came into force with regards to leave of absence this term. The government have made some changes to the fixed penalty notice scheme.
The information below is taken directly from the government website:
From August 2024, the fine for school absences across the country will be £80 if paid within 21 days, or £160 if paid within 28 days. This rate is in line with inflation and is the first increase since 2012.
In the case of repeated fines, if a parent receives a second fine for the same child within any three-year period, this will be charged at the higher rate of £160.
Fines per parent will be capped to two fines within any three-year period. Once this limit has been reached, other action like a parenting order or prosecution will be considered.
If you’re prosecuted and attend court because your child hasn’t been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500.
Money raised via fines is only used by the local authority to cover the costs of administering the system, and to fund attendance support. Any extra money is returned to the government.
It’s the responsibility of the local authority to decide when to issue fines to parents, meaning the process varies from council to council. However, under the national rules, all schools are required to consider a fine when a child has missed .. sessions for unauthorised reasons.
A reminder that the £80 fine is per parent, per child. In circumstances where parents are separated, only the parent who can influence the decision making to take the child out of education may be fined.
To clarify, this is a government scheme which schools must implement. All the money from the fixed penalty notices goes to the local authority and the fines are enforced by them. As a school we monitor attendance regularly and have a duty to inform the LA of any children who are missing their educational entitlement due to holidays in term time or any other leave of absence.
The LA Education Welfare team will work with school and families to support children who are missing education for a variety of reasons, the fixed penalty notices stated above are for holidays in term time. However the scheme may be implemented in cases where children are persistently absent and progress to improve this is not being made.
Thankfully the majority of our children have good or better attendance which impacts positively on their social, emotional and learning outcomes. Thank you to our families for your continued support.
