VE 80th Anniversary Celebrations in school

We celebrated VE Day 80 in school by wearing red white and blue or uniforms from service teams that we belong to. We sang the national song I vow to thee my country and watched clips about the special day.

We were lucky enough to be part of the VE mail project so have received a letter from Commander Eskdale aged 101. His letter details his role in the war, his memories of VE Day and a little bit about his career in the marines. Each class has created responses to him, either in the form of individual letters, cards or pictures. This is a wonderful project to participate in, our children are very proud of participating and I’m sure the veterans have delighted in sharing their stories with future generations.

Below are some examples of our responses. We also plan to create a display to showcase these within school.

Class R embraced the VE Day celebratory atmosphere by making their own tea party food -some using ration worthy recipes! They made scones and jam tarts which they then enjoyed as a street party with tea sets and cake stands. They listened to wartime music, having delightful conversations with their peers.

In assembly we watched an informative video with photographs and clips from VE Day and interviews from people who remembered the day, one person shared his memories of delivering newspapers to share the news of the victory.

Gallery below showcases how we marked the occasion within school.

SAT’s testing next week

National tests take place for all Y6 pupils in state schools in England next week.

Monday – Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

Tuesday – Reading

Wednesday – Maths papers 1 & 2

Thursday – Maths paper 3

There will be some disruption to the usual school routines next week – later playtimes and possibly lunchtimes as we have to wait until the tests are completed, this is to ensure that we provide the Y6 pupils with the best possible chance of success. They are well prepared and ready to shine, we know that they will try their best, this is all we can ask for!

A reminder that Y6 pupils need to wear normal school uniform next week – hoodies cannot be worn in the tests. SATs breakfast will be provided, starting at 8.30am.
