Year 5 Anglo Saxon Day at Bishops Wood Field Center

Yesterday, class 5 visited Bishops Wood Field Center to experience what every day life was like for the Anglo Saxons. The children spent the morning building traditional Anglo Saxon shelters and covering them with moss and bracken. Once they were made the children got to sit and play inside them. After lunch, the children practiced their rowing skills and saw what an Anglo Saxon house would have been like. The children also had a go at three traditional Anglo Saxon jobs. They practiced spinning wool into yarn in order to make clothing, they bent and hammered copper wire into shapes to make broaches and they made pinch pots out of clay. To finish the day the children played a game.

Thomas Adams Science Lesson

This week year 5 and some year 6 pupils had an exciting science lesson from Mr Gilbert a teacher at Thomas Adams school. The children tested water resistance by dropping plasticine shapes in oil and they made a rocket which they later launched into the sky from the school field. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and impressed Mr Gilbert with their excellent behaviour, enthusiam and scientific knowledge. It was lovely to give the children a taste of how exciting science is – especially once they get to secondary school.

Uniform

A reminder that full uniform is expected at all times. Even though we are approaching the end of term, that shouldn’t mean that we let pride in our uniform standards slip.  We wear our Hodnet blue, to show that we are part of our school team, we are smart, proud and ready to learn. We are also adhering to our school rules and values by wearing the correct uniform, as it is a school policy to wear it.

Uniform is a fundamental part of most schools and other organisations procedures, ensuring communities are unified. Our children will find high expectations of uniform standards right through their educational career, so we aim high from the beginning.

We also recognise that our children require parental support to ensure they are adhering to our uniform policy. Thank you to parents and families for your cooperation with this.

Uniform Policy 2024 26

We have lots of uniform free to families due to the high number of good quality donations that we receive. Please pop into the lobby to take a look of you would like some.

Thomas Adams Taster Day

This week class 5 had the opportunity to visit Thomas Adams secondary school for a taster day. They enjoyed the secondary school experience and took part in many exciting lessons, including, a Science lesson, a PE lesson where they played basketball, an Art lesson where they used oil pastels to create different effects, a DT lesson where they did some sewing and a music lesson where they listened to different types of music and had the opportunity to have a go at playing some different instruments.

Science Week in Class 5

Class 5 had a very busy and exciting science week last week. At the beginning of the week with Mrs Arnold children did a heart rate investigation in a PE lesson. They had the water bus workshop on Tuesday and they did the mentos and coke experiment which they had read about in a guided reading text. Later in the week children did a thermal conductivity investigation to finish their topic on properties and changes of materials. They also did a reaction times investigation, enjoyed spending money in the science gadget shop and enjoyed watching the very exciting Xplore science show on Friday.

Have you ever wondered what our teachers favourite books are?

Have you ever asked them?
If you pop down to the KS1 library you will see their latest recommendations on the new display board. There are also book reviews written by our pupils who attend our lunchtime book club, these are there to give people a helping hand when choosing a next book.

Remember to share your recommendations, you might just inspire someone…

Happy reading everyone.

Severn Trent Water Visit

This week, Class 3, 4 and 5 enjoyed a visit from Severn Trent Water who brought their amazing interactive buses to bring the wonders of water to life.

On the Digibus, the children watched an animated video, journeying across the world to see how vital water is. This was followed by an interactive quiz using digital keypads! The children had the chance to put on some virtual reality glasses and enter a world where they tracked a raindrop, learning how it is purified before and after visiting our home.

In the Experibus, the children stepped into the role of a water worker. They used detective skills, including testing samples of water, to work out which place was responsible for polluting the water supply.

The children also enjoyed some fun games on the playground. The giant board game taught us why we need to value water as a precious resource and the ‘flush it or bin it’ relay, with realistic props, was a real hit!!

Science Gadget Shop

Next week is our school Science Enrichment week. We are running the science gadget shop again this year as it has proved highly successful in previous years. Children can bring a small amount of money to purchase science related toys and games. Most items are between 50p and £2.50. Miss Evans, our science coordinator, will run it during lunchtime on Wednesday and Thursday.

Parents are asked to send a small amount of money in with their child, in a named envelope, to enable them to visit the shop. All profits from the gadget shop will go towards new school science equipment.

London Experience Day!

As part of our aim to offer rich quality experiences, which open our children’s eyes and minds to the world around them, we took our Y5&6 pupils to London on Friday 1st December. This is an experience that we will offer very two years going forwards, previously managing this experience only once before the pandemic hit. As a culmination of our British History focus on Monarchy, which is a thread running throughout our Humanities curriculum, we visited Westminster Abbey and The Tower of London. In the Abbey the children were able to put their research into practice by actually seeing and touching the memorials to our great historical monarchs. At the Tower we were mesmerised by the Crown Jewels and completed our fact finding question trails, some of us also enjoyed a memorable tour from one of the Yeoman guards. A fantastic day, the 5am start was all worth is as we managed to see so many sights, and gave our children the opportunity to achieve many ‘firsts’. We travelled both on foot and on the underground, taking in The Mall, Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, The Cenotaph and War Memorials, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and ending with a Christmassy feel in Covent Garden.

We are so proud of our children who embraced this opportunity with positive learning attitudes. Many of them hadn’t been on a train before and lots hadn’t been to London. Their behaviour was exceptional, they were a joy to be with on this journey, and they were a credit to themselves and our school.
