Exploring homes in the past

During our Monday afternoon session a couple of boxes were delivered from the museum, some items from the past that we would find in homes. However the museum had mixed them up with the lost property and some things were new. We sorted the new items and the items from the past. We talked about the different materials used to make them.

During the afternoon we had the opportunity to explore these items:
-we played a guessing game about what some of the items would have been used for: some guessed that the bed warming pan was for cooking, some guessed that the toasting fork was used for hunting. We revealed the real uses for them at the end of the day.
-We practised polishing brass
-We set up our home corner as a home from the past and got rid of all the items that were from now.
-We drew items that were from our homes now and also items from the past.

Leaf Museum

Mrs Johnson was feeling sad because she didn’t get to come to the museum with us. She told us that she had tried to create a tree museum in our woodland but she just did not know enough about the trees to do this and the fairies hadn’t even brought her anything to help (or so we thought!) So…today we helped her! We looked closely at a collection of leaves and tried to locate the tree that each leaf belonged to. We used the leaf identification sheet, left by the fairies, to find out the names of the trees and then we created our own individual museums in a bag. We each made our own leaf rubbing on our bag and wrote the name of the tree. We managed to make Mrs Johnson smile again!

Walk around Shrewsbury

After a great morning in the museum we went for a walk around Shrewsbury. We we set with the task of comparing it to the village of Hodnet, we looked at lots of the landmark buildings.

We escaped the rain all day and when we returned to school we talked about the parts of our visit that were our favourites, lots of us told the rest of the class that our favourite part was the bus journey and our lunch!

Museum visit

Last Tuesday Class R visited Shrewsbury Museum. Lots of us were excited for our first journey on a bus. We had a great morning exploring the museum and enjoying the immersive workshop called “Seen and not heard” based on a story book where the children from portraits sneak out at night and run riot. We were museum security guards who looked for clues that the children had come out of the portraits and caused havock in the museum. We drew fossils, explored artefacts and looked at portraits.

Oral Health workshop

Jill the school nurse came into school to talk to us about teeth brushing and the importance of this. We talked about how many times a day we need to brush our teeth and the best way to do this. We also timed Dennis the Dragon brushing his teeth for 2 minutes. After we played a game sorting foods which are good for our teeth and those which are not good for our teeth.

June’s Year of reading Challenge

Our June “year of the reader” activities. On Monday we started our June year of the reader challenge: listening to stories. We opened our June book: Oi Cat! Some children even volunteered to read this to the class, we have already read the book twice (with added characters in from our class!) and we look forward to lots of re-reads of the funny book. We have also enjoyed listening to the story on the yoto player and listening to some of our PSED stories on the Tonie box.

Visiting the church

A few weeks ago we had a wonderful walk through Hodnet Hall gardens to St Luke’s Church, Hodnet. We explored the church, searched for different features and talked about what showed it was a special building for some people. Lots of us counted how many crosses we could find in the church and we were all very impressed by the stained glass windows.

Beltane Celebrations

In our woodland Wednesday session last week the fairies sent a letter about a traditional celebration that they have at this time each year called Beltane. We might know this as May Day. They told us about some of the things that they do to celebrate and we recreated them for our own celebration! We lit a fire and toasted soda bread on it drizzled with honey (in the hope that we will have a sweet Summer, the fairies left us a loaf of soda bread and some honey), we made green man masks, we also made crowns. Some of us checked the wild flowers we had planted and we were pleased to see that they have started to grow well! We took more willow cuttings and put them in a bucket to see if they will grow roots.

The fairies had also left us some natural paintbrushes made from sticks and different woodland items and we tried to make our own natural paints using the charcoals from a previous fire, grass, dandelions and mud. We may have mixed too much water with the paint though!

Andy Goldsworthy inspired artwork

Look at our fantastic masterpieces. We explored some of Andy Goldsworthy’s artwork and talked about the materials and shapes he used before heading into the woodland to create our own Goldsworthy inspired masterpieces. Some of us then used the voice recorders to narrate our work.
