Storytelling Week 2026

Storytelling week was the second event in our calendar of events to support the National Year of Reading 2026. We enjoyed a range of events to highlight the importance of listening to, telling and reading stories.

On Tuesday, Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a ‘Soundtrack Your Story’ workshop from the National Literacy Trust where they learnt about rhythm and rap with Alim Kamara.

On Wednesday, we held a storytelling assembly where each class shared their Talk for Writing text. Reception told ‘The wheels on the bus’; Year 1 told ‘Lost and Found’; Year 2 told ‘Edgar’s Adventure’, a warning tale, and Year 3 told a suspense story ‘The Manor House’. Year 4 carried on the suspense stories with Zelda Claw; Year 5 shared the non-chronological report ‘The Rhiswanozebtah’ and Year 6 told the story ‘Red’, a twist on the traditional version of Little Red Riding Hood.

On Thursday, we had a special visit from Sal Tonge who is a storyteller. Each class enjoyed a workshop with Sal where they listened to and joined in with lots of stories and songs.

We have also held a class reading swap where the older children read with the younger children.

We hope that our storytelling events will have provided enjoyable experiences for all!

Making shapes in gymnastics

We focused on making shapes with our bodies in our gymnastics session.

Story telling week

We really enjoyed story telling with Sally Tonge, she told us stories in imaginative ways and helped us to understand how we could be great story tellers! We especially enjoyed the story of how the snowdrops gave the snow it’s colour.

Music composition

This week in our music session we warmed up and explored the pulse of music similarly to our last session. We listened to the piece of music: The eye of the Tiger and discussed how this made us feel, what we noticed about the music and how it compared to the piece we listened to last week. We composed our own short music patterns on the glockenspiels using three notes.

Noun phrases

This week we have been reading a text about “The Draognfish Flying machine”. During Friday’s English lesson we wrote a descriptive paragraph which included expanded adjective phrases in order to describe the vehicle. Here are some examples:

Micro habitats

During our Forest Schools session we looked at micro habitats. We went on a hunt to look for micro habitats and made a tally chart of the living things we found in these micro habitats.

Music

This week in music we have been learning about pulse and tempo. At the beginning of the lesson we moved along to the pulse of the music following the penguins and we also warmed our faces up ready for singing. We sang a song and our partners tried to play the notes along with it on the glockenspiel.  Part of the lesson was listening to the music Bolero, we watched an orchestra playing this piece of music and tried to identify the pulse.

Habitats in our school ground

This week we have been learning about different habits of living things. We have identified the habitats that we find around school on a simple map.

Team building in PE

This term we are focusing on team building in our Thursday afternoon PE sessions. This week we took part in some Pirate activities, starting off with the game “Captains Coming” and then working as teams to help all the pirates in our crew move from one “island” (side of the hall) to the other “island” (the other side of the hall).
