VE day plans

Next Thursday, 8th May, we will be celebrating the 80 year anniversary of VE day. Children are invited to come to school wearing red, white and blue, this could be as simple as their usual school uniform with something red additional, or they may come in non-uniform wearing clothes in the colours of red, white and blue. Children who are part of a service group or team may choose to come wearing their uniform such as beavers, cubs, scouts, brownies, cadets etc.

In school we will be doing the following to mark the occasion:

  • Having a special lunch with VE day cake and bunting.
  • We will learn the song ‘I vow to thee my country’ to mark our own ‘nation special song’ during our morning assembly. Chelsea pensioner Colin Thackery is leading the nation in song that evening to coincide with the lighting of the beacons.
  • We will share the special video of the song made to mark this special occasion alongside sharing other resources.
  • We will learn about the significance of the day.
  • We will participate in the VE Mail Project. This involves reading and responding to a letter written for school by a veteran. We will read the letter from veteran Commander John Eskdale aged 101 and reply to him with handwritten letters from each class.
  • We will share examples of our day on our website and produce a display within school.

More information about the national events can be found at https://ve80.com/

Father’s Day Lunch

On Friday 20th June we will be hosting our Father’s day lunch. This is the same day as sports day, we have chosen this date with duplicate events based on feedback from previous years when families found it tricky to get time off work for multiple events in quick succession.

Please see the information on parent pay to sign up for the lunch.

Staffing for Reception 2025 26

In September we will be welcoming Mrs Johnson back to a permanent teaching role in our school. Mrs Johnson has worked for us for a number of years covering maternity leaves and working on a temporary basis and assisting when we need supply teachers, so she is well known to our children and staff. We are thrilled to welcome her to work alongside Mrs Noden in our Reception class next academic year. She will be in school throughout this term as we prepare for the new intake through our transition arrangements.

In September our Reception class is full with a waiting list, we are delighted that so many families have chosen us as partners in their child’s education.

Over the course of this term I will be updating children and families about September staffing arrangements in preparation for our move up morning on 2nd July.

Wings to the Past project

Please see the information below about this local community project taking place on 8th – 10th August 2025.  Free spaces are limited to 15 for Hodnet Parish residents, so please act quickly if you would like to take part in this wonderful archaeological opportunity.

Lunchtime supervisor needed

Are you interested in helping children to play and thrive at lunchtime? If so we would like to hear from you!

In September we will have a vacancy on our staff team for a lunchtime supervisor to work for 1 hour per day, 5 days a week. 12-1pm.

Please see Mrs Lyall for further information before 16th May.

Anyone interested in this post will be subject to enhanced safeguarding and right to work checks as part of the necessary safer recruitment process.

St Luke’s church family weekend and competition

THIS IS OUR FAMILY

St Luke’s Church, Hodnet – Family Weekend

14th and 15th June, 10am-4pm

We invite all the children in the parish to create something which reflects an important person or people in their lives, whether it be family, friend, or pet.  This could be a painting, drawing, piece of craft, flower decoration, a poem – whatever springs to mind when thinking of that special relationship.

Closing date for entries is Friday 6th June when they will be picked up from Hodnet School.  Your entry needs to have your full name and age on the back of it or on an accompanying note.  Alternatively you can bring your entry to St Luke’s Church on Saturday 7th June between 10am and 12 noon.

Every entrant will receive a special certificate.  There will be a prize for the three best entries: ages 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

All entries will be displayed in St Luke’s over the weekend of 14th and 15th June for everyone to see.  The church will be decorated with flowers and the historical records will be available for children to see if their parents or grandparents were christened, married, or buried at St Luke’s.

If you have a small photo of a local wedding or baptism, bring a copy to hang on our ‘family tree’.

Church tower tours will be run from 10am – 12 noon (adults only).

A special ‘Songs of Praise’ is to be held on Sunday 11am-12 noon reflecting on ‘Our Church Family’ and there will be a chance to vote for your favourite hymn to be included in the service.

  • Class 5 – Seb
  • Class 6 – Daisy

Congratulations to all our chosen Book Worms, your reading at home and school was excellent this week.

Remember to keep up those good reading habits.

Rock Steady concert

Well done to our Rock Steady Rock Stars who performed for school and their families this week. Playing with enthusiasm and confidence, a joy to see. A great start to our summer term!

Headlice in school

We have been informed that a pupil is being treated for headlice in class 4. Please be vigilant and check your children’s hair regularly. Children can remain in school as normal, but we kindly ask that the headlice are treated to try to prevent the spread. Where possible, hair should ideally be tied up for school anyway, again this helps to prevent the spread in addition to helping children to focus without distractions in their face.

Be prepared for the summer sun

Please can parents/carers ensure that children are fully equipped for their school day in the summer. Children need:

  • A sun hat.
  • A full water bottle containing only water – no juice please.
  • Sun cream already applied before school – staff cannot apply this throughout the day. Children can bring a roll on provided they can do this themselves, however this is not ideal as it can get messy! It also takes up their valuable playing time, so before school is more preferable.
  • Trainers in school for the mile run.

Weekly House Points 2.5.25

Weekly house point totals are:
