Supertato English Talk for Writing Unit

A few weeks ago we were shocked to find some vegetables in our classroom who were being taunted by the Evil Pea. During this Talk For Writing unit we have been writing speech bubbles, thinking of and writing questions and answers for characters in the story, learning the text using a text map and writing our own versions of the story. Children came up with their own villain character (Evil Pizza, Evil ice cream, Evil Broccoli are some examples) and their own super hero character (Super Broccoli, Super Carrot etc). Children used the model text to guide their writing of their own fast pacing story!

Year of Reading – April – Reading outside!

2026 is the National Year of Reading. At Hodnet School, we have created a Year of Reading moment for each month and April have children the opportunity to read outside. The weather has been glorious and perfect for enjoying a book in the beautiful grounds of our school!

Learning about money

We have recently been learning about money in maths, we used coins to work out how we would pay for different items in a pretend shop and then progressed and learnt how to give the correct change from £1. We learnt that £1 is the same as 100p and so used the number line method to subtract the amount we were paying from 100.

Easter artwork

In order to create part of our Easter cards we practised the art skill of colour mixing, specifically creating different tints. We then used the colours we had made to create a beautiful egg for our cards.

Jungle artwork

Inspired by Henri Rousseau we created our own pieces of artwork: A Tiger in a tropical storm. We used various techniques to create the overall piece of artwork: pencil sketching, using pastels to create a pouncing tiger, layering, printing, collage and water colour painting. The pieces we created were pretty spectacular!

Hockey Match at Maurice Chandler

 

Well done to Year 2 and Year 5 who took part in the Hockey Tournament at Maurice Chandler this week.

The competition was good fun and we worked well as a team. It was a really good experience for everyone. Before our matches we practised with another school who were really friendly.

World book day fun

Class 2 had a wonderful day marking World Book day on Friday. Our costumes were all fantastic and we had great fun in the whole school assembly. Back in class we created wanted posters for a “book traitor”, made our own mini books, played games involving book characters, some of us read books to the school ginea pigs, some of us created comic strip type books and made something from a book from lego. In our forest schools session during the afternoon we read a book called: “Not a stick”, we were inspired to pick up a stick and use our imagination to use it alongside our play.

A Journey Story

This week we started our English Talk for Writing unit learning about journey stories and how to write one. We read the text Meerkat Mail and found out about Sonny the meerkat who goes on a journey. We made our own text maps and also wrote letters to the Jekeil who had taken Sonny from our classroom. The last photo is an extract of an excellent letter!
