Mrs Arnold focused on online safety at the start of the week. This years theme was about exploring the safe and responsible use of AI (Artificial Intelligence). Children participated in a live lesson online on Tuesday morning and assemblies and guided reading lessons at the beginning of the week also focused on the above theme. In the second half of the week Miss Evans focused on Mental Health. Thursday afternoon was dedicated to activities linked to thinking about ‘where we belong – this is my place’ which was the theme of this years mental health week. Children made belonging maps to show all the places that they feel accepted and where they can be themselves. Assemblies and guided reading sessions at the end of the week also focused on this theme.
1 month ago Posted on 22nd Feb 2026 by Sharon Evans Storytelling Week in Class 5 During storytelling week Class 5 really enjoyed various activities. They enjoyed sharing their talk for writing text ‘The Rhiswanozebta’ during a special assembly. They also participated in and enjoyed a storytelling workshop where they learnt some new stories to take home and tell to family and friends. They enjoyed going into class 2 at the end of the day to read and share stories with younger children and they enjoyed writing a 10-sentence story where they had to stick to specific rules for each sentence.
2 months ago Posted on 27th Jan 2026 by Sharon Evans Neutralising Acids Year 5 are really enjoying learning about properties and changes of materials in science lessons. Last week, they learnt how to test the PH of different liquids to see if they were an acid, alkali or if they were neutral. They learnt about the PH scale and what colours indicate acids and alkalis. This week year 5 have been learning about neutralising acids. They started off with pure acid (vinegar) and predicted how many grams of (alkali) bicarbonate of soda it would take to neutralise the acid. After each gram they tested the liquid to see if it was changing and becoming more neutral. It took 21 grams of alkali to completely neutralise the acid. They continued their investigations by slightly diluting the acid a bit more each time they repeated the investigation and correctly predicted that it would take less alkali each time to neutralise the acid. As the bicarbonate of soda was added to the vinegar the children observed bubbling, foaming and fizzing and knew a chemical reaction was taking place. They also learnt the medical benefits of neutralising acids, for example when treating heartburn alkali medication can be taken to neutralise the stomach acid. Well done year 5 you are becoming amazing scientists!

Please complete your comprehension activity in homework folders that went home yesterday. Please write or type a first draft of the beginning and build up of your dilemma story which we were due to start writing in class today. You planned your story yesterday so should have your ideas still fresh in your heads. Please bring your first drafts to school on Monday so you can edit and improve them with Mrs Arnold. Please log on to TTRS (Mrs Arnold will be checking). Please log on to spelling shed and complete all outstanding tasks. Complete the Maths sheet continuing to practice converting improper fractions to mixed numbers from yesterday .Maths – Snow Day Take care everybody and enjoy the snow too. See you next week. 1 year ago Posted on 16th Mar 2025 by Sharon Evans Trip to Ironbridge On Friday March 14th class 5 went to Ironbridge to do some Geography fieldwork. The children were asking the questions: What draws people to Ironbridge? and What is there for visitors in Ironbridge? The children plotted landmarks and places of interest on a map of Ironbridge. They also surveyed the public to ask them why they were in Ironbridge and what they were doing there. (The children were incredibly polite when speaking to members of the public and the public were very happy to give the children their time and answer their questions). Children also collected date in the way of a tally chart as to how many shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels there were in Ironbridge. Later in the day we walked to Jackfield Tile Museum where children learnt all about Victorian tile making and the start of the industrial revolution. Children got the opportunity to design and make their own tile to keep, which they enjoyed.
1 year ago Posted on 18th Feb 2025 by Sharon Evans Online Safety Week in Class 5 This online safety week class 5 have been learning about scams. They know what a scam is and how to watch out for the red flags that might warn them of scams. They understand that scams can come in the form of emails, text messages, through social media and online games. They know to tell a trusted adult if they are suspicious of anything or think they may have been targeted. Year 5 children have participated in role play scenarios, watched the BBC live online safety lesson, produced posters of their learning and taken part in a quiz to show their learning and understanding on the topic. Well done class 5 you are all very clued up. S – Sounds too good to be true – then it probably is. C – Contact you did not expect – do not engage in activity with unknown people. A – Asks for personal details – never share personal details online. M – Money or trade is asked for – never share bank details online or trade with unknown players in games.
1 year ago Posted on 20th Jan 2025 by Sharon Evans Testing the Ph of liquids This week year 5 have been getting stuck into their new science unit ‘properties and changes of materials’ by testing the Ph of different liquids. They had to dip a piece of Ph paper into various liquids and watch as the paper turned a different colour. They then had to match the colour of the paper to a colour chart to decide what Ph the liquid was and whether it was an acid, alkali or neutral liquid.
1 year ago Posted on 09th Oct 2024 by Sharon Evans Class 5’s day at the National Space Centre This week, years 5 and 6 went on a trip to The National Space Centre in Leicester to consolidate their learning on Earth and Space, which they have been learning about in Science lessons. The children thoroughly enjoyed their time in the space centre with lots of hands on, interactive activities to keep them busy. There were also opportunities to read and learn about the history of space travel and the apollo missions to the moon. The day was topped off with a visit to the planetarium to watch a show about how to become an astronaut.
2 years ago Posted on 16th Jul 2024 by Sharon Evans Year 5 Anglo Saxon Day at Bishops Wood Field Center Yesterday, class 5 visited Bishops Wood Field Center to experience what every day life was like for the Anglo Saxons. The children spent the morning building traditional Anglo Saxon shelters and covering them with moss and bracken. Once they were made the children got to sit and play inside them. After lunch, the children practiced their rowing skills and saw what an Anglo Saxon house would have been like. The children also had a go at three traditional Anglo Saxon jobs. They practiced spinning wool into yarn in order to make clothing, they bent and hammered copper wire into shapes to make broaches and they made pinch pots out of clay. To finish the day the children played a game.
2 years ago Posted on 05th Jul 2024 by Sharon Evans Thomas Adams Science Lesson This week year 5 and some year 6 pupils had an exciting science lesson from Mr Gilbert a teacher at Thomas Adams school. The children tested water resistance by dropping plasticine shapes in oil and they made a rocket which they later launched into the sky from the school field. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and impressed Mr Gilbert with their excellent behaviour, enthusiam and scientific knowledge. It was lovely to give the children a taste of how exciting science is – especially once they get to secondary school.
