School bell

We have reduced the number of school bells throughout the school day. The bell is very loud, it has to be as it is also our fire alarm bell and must be a certain volume in order to meet the fire safety requirements. Since we had our new bell points, we have found them to be quite piercing and loud for children and staff and this year in particular some of our youngest children have been quite frightened by the noise, causing unnecessary upset throughout the day. We now only use the bells at the end of lunchtime and playtime when the children are on the playground as a signal to come stop and line up.

We ask for your patience as we all get used to the new routine of using our classroom clocks to keep us on track throughout the day, including at the end of the school day.

Thank you

Mrs Lyall

Remembrance

Today on Remembrance day, we held our daily assembly at 10.45am and included a two minutes silence at 11 o’clock. Many of our children had participated in Remembrance services or parades on Remembrance Sunday and were very knowledgeable and respectful as expected.

We watched this BBC clip about Remembrance.

We watched this video in silence during our two minutes silence.

Our Y5/6 children who were swimming held their two minutes silence at the pool side.

This afternoon our Reception children walked to the Cenotaph to lay a handmade wreath and children in other classes marked the occasion through class discussion, reading and art.

PTA Bonfire Night Safety

I led our assembly this week about bonfire night talking about both the historical and the safety side of the event. Our children are well informed and very sensible, particularly about firework safety, wearing appropriate clothing to be seen and keeping animals safe.

A few safety pointers for our event on 8th November:

  • The event is sold out – tickets are not available on the gate. Entry via pre-booked tickets only.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please remind your child that although we are on the playground, running games are not permitted due to the large number of people expected to attend.
  • Please be aware that sparklers are not permitted.
  • Please take care when parking at the event, ensuring that driveways are not blocked as access to family homes is needed at all times.
  • Please do not block our school car park – emergency access is required at all times.
  • Smoking or vaping is not permitted on our school site. Unfortunately each year at our previous bonfire events I have needed to remind people about not smoking on our premises. Please could families politely inform extended family members that our school is a non-smoking site at all times and to kindly respect these safety rules. Thank you for your cooperation.
  • Please do not leave animals in cars outside the event. We have been informed that this occurred last year, with an apparently highly distressed dog left in a family car and parked outside a residents house on Shrewsbury Street.

We look forward to the event and hope to see you there.
