The Hungry Beak Cafe

The fairies had written us another letter, this time thanking us for all the bird feeders we had made. They told us that they were setting up a “Hungry Beak” café and they needed some new recipes. We innovated our own bird pizzas and took photos of all the stages so that we can write our own instructions for making a bird pizza. We talked about the imperative verbs that we would use in an instruction text like this.

Making birds nests

We have learnt about different birds making birds nests, we watched videos of blue tits making nests and robins. We read a book about different kinds of birds nests, called Best Nest and a story called “The Prefect Nest”. We also watched a video about puffins nests. The children then used the “scrap modelling” materials to create their own Perfect nest for a bird and talked about the materials they chose based on their qualities.

Creating moving vehicles

We have been working hard making vehicles with axels, a chassis and wheels that move. The children have researched moving toy vehicles and looked at the different parts of these. They designed their own vehicles, tractors, vans, lorries and an ice cream van.

Bonkers about birds

We have followed the children’s interests and we are embarking on a project about birds. The fairies left us a bag of bird seed and items to help us make bird feeders along with a letter asking us to help their friends the birds and lots of bird feeder making instructions. We tried out lots of the instructions and made lots of different bird feeders.

Shrove Tuesday fun

We marked Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes and topping them with traditional syrup, honey or lemon and sugar toppings. We also explored the composition of 7 with healthy fruit toppings on pancakes, exploring the different ways that we could put 7 pieces of fruit on the top of the pancakes.

Class R meet the new school pets…

Polly Put the Kettle on

As part of our nursery rhymes project we looked at the nursery rhyme: Polly put the kettle on. We looked at pictures depicting this and talked about “putting the kettle on” meant putting it on the cooker. Some children from the class acted out putting on the kettled now and putting on the kettle in the past. We talked about the differences: clothes, electrical appliances etc. We also looked at how they would have made tea using loose tea leaves, we had great fun trying this with cold water and using the tea strainers.

London’s Burning

We learnt about firefighters when some of the Hodnet Fire station crew came into school and talked to us about keeping safe. We sang them London’s burning as a reward!

Miss Polly Had a Dolly…

We learnt the nursery rhyme: Miss Polly had a Dolly who was sick, sick, sick. Dr Le Brun came to talk to us about being a doctor. He showed us how to take the doll’s temperature, how to bandage and much more. We had a great morning!
