Our Comparative Investigation

We have been learning about plants and how they live, grow, and reproduce. Today we set up a comparative investigation to find out how temperature affects how a plant transports water. We put flowers (chrysanthemums and carnations) into beakers of water, coloured with food colouring, and placed each beaker into either a cold, warm or room temperature location. We had to ensure a fair test by making sure:

  • the flowers were the same type (or species) and were the same length
  • the beakers were the same size and made form the same material
  • the amount of water was the same
  •  the amount of food colouring was the same
  •  the only thing that was different, the variable, was the location temperature where we put the beakers.

Over the coming week, we will observe the flowers and compare how quickly they take up the blue water and show it in their petals. Watch this space for the results!
